Ingvar Grimsmo
Photography has been part of my life since 1967.
I was born in Kristiansund, Norway, in 1951 and received my first Pentax single-lens reflex camera from my father when I was 15. Along with the camera came a piece of advice that stayed with me: if I could earn enough from photography to pay for my equipment, I had “made it.” More than five decades later, I still think that was a pretty good definition.
My first experience as a working photographer came as a stringer for a local newspaper, photographing people, places and events. But growing up among the mountains, fjords and rugged coastline of western Norway made nature an inevitable subject. As I travelled with a camera, wildlife, landscapes and the details of the natural world became an increasingly important part of my photography.
Over the years, that journey has taken me from Norway to Canada and across North America, with many years spent photographing the landscapes and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest. My work has also included event and real estate photography, along with images created during travels through Europe and elsewhere.
Today, my portfolio brings together photographs made across many years and many places: wildlife and birds, landscapes, historic architecture, rural scenes, travel, people and those unexpected moments that simply make me stop and reach for a camera.
I still approach photography much as I did when I started—with curiosity, patience and the belief that there is almost always something worth photographing if you take the time to look.
